Child Abuse Information

Child Abuse Facts
Every year, one million children are confirmed to be victims of child abuse or neglect and nearly 1,500 die as a result.
Child abuse affects 1 in 4 Americans.
Child abuse harms more girls than boys.
Child abuse happens in all cultural, ethnic, and income groups.
Child abuse can be physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or through neglect.
Child abuse impacts public safety by escalating criminal activity.
Child abuse drives up medical costs.
Even when abuse is substantiated, the child is typically older and often comes into the system not as a victim but as runaways,
delinquents or child prostitutes.  If we get to these children earlier we can prevent decades of additional heartache and problems.
Child abuse causes injury and death to ten times more children than all forms of cancer.
Child victims receive an inadequate share of our country’s financial resources.  Although child abuse is ten times the rate of
cancer, we spend ten times more preventing cancer as we do preventing child abuse.

To Report Abuse
Children need to be safe from child abuse and neglect. If you have reason to suspect that a child has been a victim of abuse or
neglect, immediately make a report to Social & Rehabilitation Services (SRS) in Kansas, or the Division of Family Services (DFS)
in Missouri, or call your local police department.

If a child is in immediate danger, call 911.

Protecting Your Children
Know who your child is spending time with.  If they spend time with adults find out as much as you can about them.  Get to know
you child’s friends and their families.
Get involved in your child’s life.  Many predators avoid children who have parents that are active in their children's lives.
Be alert.  Pay attention to anyone focusing an unusual amount of attention on your child.
Teach your child:  Teach them that no one should touch the "private" parts of their body. Teach your children that their bodies are
their own and it is okay not to want someone to touch them.  Teach your children age appropriate basic sexual education and the
proper names for body parts.
Keep communication open.  Encourage them to ask questions and talk about their experiences in all areas of their lives. Let them
know they can always turn to you when something is bothering them or concerning them.  Ask your child directly on a regular
basis if someone has touched them inappropriately.
Children are trusting and dependent.  It often doesn’t take physical force to engage a child in sexual activity because they often
do what is asked of them to gain love and approval.
The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children urges parents to engage in their children's online life and to educate
themselves about online exploitation.  Please remember that the most important tools to keeping children safe while online are
informed parents who are carefully monitoring activities and who are communicating with children about internet safety
precautions.
