What is the Leavenworth Child Advocacy Center
The Child Advocacy Center of Leavenworth County is the collaboration of public and private professional agencies designed to combat the
abuse of children. The goal is to provide services for children and families who have experienced the trauma of physical and sexual abuse.
The Child Advocacy Center, administered through The Alliance, is design to coordinate direct services to children and families by utilizing a
multi-disciplinary approach. The Child Advocacy Center responds to the needs of children by providing child friendly and culturally sensitive
services. The Child Advocacy Center also responds to the needs of the community by facilitating education, training, outreach, networking
and advocacy programs.

Services

Child-Centered Forensic Interviews
Leavenworth CAC coordinates the investigative interviews of children alleging sexual abuse or severe physical abuse. After a report of
abuse is made to child protective services (SRS) or law enforcement, a child may be scheduled for his or her investigative interview. Care is
taken to assess the child's cognitive skills, language development, and suggestibility. Investigation professionals observe the interview by
closed-circuit television while the child's statement is recorded on DVD/VHS. These practices ensure comprehensive and quality interviews
while reducing the number of times a child must make a statement, thus greatly reducing the child's trauma.

Family Advocacy Services
During the child’s interview, an Alliance advocate meets with the non-offending members of the child’s family to assist with family crisis,
inform them about specialized therapeutic services and community resources, and provide an understanding of the legal process.  Follow-
up contact with families identifies and provides referral needs. Our advocates are trained to refer families to professionals and agencies
that have special training, skills and services in trauma and victimization.

Child Abuse Medical Evaluations
The Leavenworth CAC provides on-site child abuse medical evaluations for children meeting specific referral criteria. Specialized medical
staff conducts a complete assessment of the child’s physical, developmental and emotional heath, collect any evidence and identify and
treat injury and disease.  The on-site medical evaluation is conducted in a child-friendly facility.

Multidisciplinary Case Reviews
Following each child interview, CAC personnel meet with the investigation team, including child protection workers, law enforcement
officers, medical personnel and other professionals to plan investigation strategies. Our case tracking system allows the Leavenworth CAC
to follow the progress of each case through the child protection and criminal justice systems. The coordination of these services significantly
reduces the child's trauma, enhances the quality of the investigation and essentially improves prosecution and conviction rates of child
abuse cases.

Education & Training
The CAC also responds to the needs of the community by facilitating education, training, outreach, and networking.  For education, training,
outreach, and other speaking opportunities please contact the CAC director at 913-682-8979 or via email at aafvcac@sbcglobal.net.
